Surplus lines tax FAQ
What is this? Is it for insurance?
Yes — insurance only. SLTax estimates surplus lines (non-admitted) premium tax and related stamping or service fees when coverage is placed outside the admitted market. It is not an income-tax, sales-tax, or personal property-tax calculator.
What is a surplus lines tax calculator?
It estimates the surplus lines premium tax and related stamping, filing, or service fees owed when a risk is placed with a non-admitted insurer. SLTax applies each jurisdiction’s schedule as of the policy effective date.
Which states does SLTax cover?
All 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands (53 jurisdictions), with coverage-aware rules where statutes differ (for example wet marine, fire, or workers compensation).
Does it follow the NRRA home-state rule?
Yes. Under the Nonadmitted and Reinsurance Reform Act, tax is generally based on the insured’s home state applied to 100% of the premium. Enter the home-state jurisdiction and policy effective date.
Can I pull numbers from my AMS screenshot?
Yes. Drop a policy, quote, or binder screenshot on the calculator. Local OCR and extraction pull state, premium, effective date, and broker fee, then run the estimate. The screenshot is deleted when the request finishes. Always verify before filing.
Do you keep my screenshots or calculator history?
No. Screenshots are processed and deleted when the extract request finishes. The free calculator does not store run history. Paid API accounts retain metering metadata (endpoint and time) for billing and the dashboard — not premiums or images. See /privacy.
Is there an API for AMS or quoting systems?
Yes. Metered REST APIs cover tax calculate, stamp wording, diligent-search required flags, placement-brief, and filing calendars — 53 jurisdictions with per-row confidence. OpenAPI at /docs; plans at /pricing.
Estimates only — confirm with the applicable DOI or stamping office before filing. See the rate reference, API docs, pricing, and privacy & retention.
